Flying the flag for mobile ice cream vans
One man with one ice cream van in the 70s is all it took to carve out a career in ice cream vending for Graham Rush. He now runs five vans with wife Maggie, and you can usually find a family member in one of them at their usual spot on Marygate Landing by the River Ouse. Graham has had his patch around Tang Hall, Clifton and Bell Farm for a good 40 years plus so you can also find him there every day other than Thursdays.
Maggie, meanwhile, looks after the events side of the business and often appears at schools, parties, weddings, corporate events, and even funerals - if someone requests a van, they will do their best to get one there for the occasion. One thing is certain: there's no danger of this great British institution dying out while those bright green and yellow vans chiming the Popeye tune are roaming the city's roads.
“This is the best job in the world when the sun is shining, it's very sociable and everywhere we go we meet someone we know.”
